The BLOOMING Upgrade: Imagined by Daphne Rodriguez and Keila Lugo

Written by: Imagine Early Learning Centers

What if stains weren’t something to avoid, but something to explore?

That question sparked a simple yet powerful experience where children turned everyday fruits and vegetables into natural dyes, transforming white t-shirts into colorful, one of a kind creations.

Inspired by the Creative Curriculum clothing study, what began as an exploration of clothing quickly became something more. It became a moment of discovery, where science, creativity, and sensory exploration came together in a meaningful way.

How We Did It

This experience was easy to set up, using materials that invited both curiosity and hands on exploration.

Materials

  • White t shirts
  • Pipettes
  • Bowls
  • Beets
  • Spinach
  • Blueberries
  • Carrots

We began by gathering colorful fruits and vegetables and inviting children to take a closer look. Together, we talked about what colors each one might create and encouraged them to make predictions.

Before starting, children tasted small pieces, engaging their senses and building a connection to the materials. Then the experimentation began. Children chose their fruits and used them to decorate their t shirts, watching as the colors slowly soaked into the fabric.

As the process unfolded, we paused to observe what was happening. Children compared their shirts, noticed differences in color and pattern, and shared their thoughts. Conversations naturally extended into wondering how time, heat, or fabric might change the results.

At the end, we reflected together by looking at the finished pieces and talking about how nature can be used to dye clothing.

Where BLOOMING Comes to Life

What may look like a simple art activity is layered with meaningful learning across our BLOOMING framework.

Through Big Brains, children explored cause and effect by observing how colors changed over time and with different materials. They compared outcomes, made predictions, and engaged in early scientific thinking in a hands on, meaningful way.

Through Learning Healthy Early, children interacted with fruits and vegetables through taste, smell, and touch, building positive, curiosity driven connections with healthy foods.

Through Only One You, every shirt told a different story. Children made their own choices, explored their own ideas, and saw that there is no single right outcome, only their own. This helped build confidence and a strong sense of individuality.

Through Our Earth, Our Home, using natural dyes introduced sustainability in a tangible way. Children saw how everyday materials can be repurposed, building early awareness of caring for the environment.

And through Nurturing Creativity, children experimented freely by mixing colors, adjusting techniques, and embracing unexpected results. They also practiced language skills by describing what they saw, felt, and created.

The Takeaway

This activity transformed a familiar art project into something deeper.

By using natural materials instead of store bought dyes, children explored science, creativity, and sustainability all at once. It created space for curiosity, experimentation, and meaningful connections to the world around them.

It is a reminder that learning does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, it begins with something as simple as a blueberry and grows into something much more.
