Learning Colors and Numbers Through Play

Written by: Imagine Early Learning Centers

Learning math in early childhood is most meaningful when it feels playful and hands on. In this activity, children explored colors and numbers while strengthening fine motor skills through a simple sorting game that encouraged focus, turn taking, and problem solving.

Materials Needed

  • Color dice labeled with three or four colors
  • One numbered dice
  • Mini puff balls in different colors
  • Tweezers
  • Small containers or paper trees to match each color

How the Activity Works

Children roll both the color dice and the number dice. The color rolled tells them which puff balls to choose, and the number rolled tells them how many to take. Using tweezers, children carefully pick up the puff balls and place them into the matching color container.

What Children Are Learning

Children practice number recognition, counting, color sorting, and fine motor control. Using tweezers also helps strengthen the muscles they will later use for writing and self help skills.
